Cat5E Ethernet Patch Cables – sometimes called patch cords – are used to connect devices to networks.  PC’s, Laptops, Printers, Servers, Switches, Routers or any combination of these devices, can be added to your network using Cat5E Patch Cables.

Common best practice is to add Cat5E Ethernet Patch Cables to Cat5E wired networks and Cat6 Ethernet Patch Cables to Cat6 wired networks.  You can check to see what type of cable was used in your network generally by looking at the label on the Data Jack that you are connecting to, or reading the label on the side of the Patch Panel if that is what you are connecting to.

While Cat6 Patch Cables can be used in Cat5E Jacks and vice versa, Cat6 Patch Cables are more expensive than Cat5E Patch Cables – so in this case you could save a few dollars using the right Patch Cable.  Also note, your network speed is limited by the least  connective element.  So in the case where a Cat5E Patch Cable might be used in a Cat6 wired environment, the speed limiting factor to your devices will be the Cat5E Patch Cable.
